Alcove shelves that belong in the room
A pair of oak-toned fitted shelves turns empty fireplace alcoves into useful storage.
The brief
The two alcoves had useful width but no structure, so books and everyday objects collected on temporary furniture. The aim was to add storage that felt connected to the fireplace rather than placed beside it.
The work
The alcoves were measured independently because old walls rarely match. Shelf lines were set in relation to the mantel and existing room proportions, then the timber was cut and finished for a warm oak tone. Scribing at the wall edges gave the installation a settled fit without trying to disguise the room’s character.
The finished shelves keep the floor clear, frame the fireplace, and leave enough varied height for books, ceramics, and practical storage.
